I enjoy using a camera to translate my visualization into reality on paper. Visualization is defined as the ability to see in the "mind's eye" the finished work before actual application. It is the creative process of images transitioning from the realm of the reactive and contemplative to the conscious and deliberate. An element of surreal gives the viewer a different perspective on the subject, removing the literal and getting down to the essence of conveying the energy of the subject. For me, the image begins when the work goes beyond merely representing reality and enters the realm of personal expression. My methods are meant to be intentional, whether in the camera or post processing.

Boat Reflection

Boats and reflections go together well. This image is no exception. Reflections of the boat's front coupled with the waves in the water enhance the mood of the photo. I'm a sucker for reflections :):):)

Butterflies

What caught my eye at first was the dilapidated awning on the trailer. On a closer look, I was struck by the butterfly adornments. I imagined that a young family lived in this trailer at one point and the butterflies were applied to the exterior to put a smile on their child's face...a whimsical moment. And now... just a reminder of the abandonment of the home.

Magical Hour

Magical hours are usually known at sunrise and sunset because of the position of the sun and the lighting. Add fog to the mix and it really becomes magical. As the sun set one evening, the fog was rolling in at the same time and the lights were beginning to come on for the evening. Fog, lights equals mystery and magical. I liked the mood that was set with nature's elements.

Palette

I've always wished that I had the natural talent to create an image from my imagination but alas, I'm not very creative. Photography is the closest I get with creativity. And this is as close as I get with a paintbrush!!! Swishes of the brush, a bright multitude of colors, and voila...images appear on paper, canvas, or even on a wall. A dash of paint becomes alive.....

Thick Soup

Very heavy fog one morning...perfect for shooting images down on the river! Sitting on the rocks and listening to the traffic on the Manhattan Bridge inching along the highway as the fog was so thick and it  was difficult to see very far in front of you. A peaceful morning to reflect on life...

Morning Reflection

Many mornings I would walk to this spot by the river to see what the image would be in the AM. It was always a different sight and on this morning, I enjoyed the reflection in the morning rains. I also really like the old trolley tracks and cobblestones. And the juxtaposition of the Brooklyn Bridge and skyscrapers tells a story of engineering feats. I really felt as if I was in another decade walking in history....a great way to start the day.

Archways

3 different archways...different lighting cast on each archway.. taken in the evening with no flash. I like the lighting and muted colors in this image. Archways make a wonderful entry to any place...a warm invitation.

Bold Colors

The blue umbrellas and the painted concrete caught my eye one morning as I was walking my grand dog!!! It had just finished raining and the sun came out lighting up the colors on this small plaza. The tables and chairs were not out yet and I liked the potted trees with the umbrellas inter dispersed. The red building helped to accentuate the FG colors nicely IMO.

An Apple a Day...

The juxtaposition of the apple and graffiti caught my eye as I was wandering some streets one day. I found it an odd pair yet I also felt that I was looking at someone's purposeful piece of artwork. I like the loader's platform that leans against the rough wall and if you look closely, there's a "bite" taken out out of the platform on the right...like a bite out of an apple. An intentional placement of the apple???!!! And the touch of graffiti for me adds an another element of art. I was enrapt with the image.

The Pose

Seagulls get a bad rap but every time I see a seagull, I know I'm near water...ocean, rivers, harbors...you name it, they love water. And every time I see a seagull, I smile...because I'm near water and that always makes me happy! He was staring right at me when I crept up very slowly and took his picture. I especially like his black eye...looking intently at me. We were one....at least for a second until some little boy ran up to get a closer look and the seagull took off....they don't hang around very long!

Broken

It was a very cold, wintry, dreary day as I walked the streets of Brooklyn. I was covered from head to toe with mittens and hats and a downy jacket to keep warm. As always, everyone was looking down at the street or at their cell phone and no one noticed the broken cane by the puddles of water. I wondered what happened. Was the person with this cane ok? Was she/he hurt? Did the person make it home ok? Where was home? I felt a deep sense of sadness as I viewed the broken cane and I hoped that the person was safe and warm somewhere. A quick shot with my iPhone and then onto my destination...wondering all the way...

Up High

Up high in the sky...Brooklyn Bridge as the sun breaks through the clouds...I am enthralled with the bridge and the engineering phenom of this bridge. For me the old lanterns add to the mood of this fabulous old bridge. As I walk the bridge, I feel that the men who built this are there with me, marveling their creation.....look to to the skies for its worthiness...a marvel of the 19th century.

Sunset Over Manhattan Skyline

Standing over some old pilings in the East River and enjoying the sunset over the Manhattan skyline. A beautiful end to a wonderful brisk cold day in NYC. I loved how the sky colors mirrored the grasses and trees in hues. Serenity...as long as you don't get too close into the city's hubbub!

Window View

Outside my tiny balcony in Brooklyn, I had an open, unobstructed view of some other apartments. My balcony literally was in a total open, no roof type place and I liked the openness in the crowded city. I imagined the inhabitants of this apartment were keeping warm during the snow showers when I shot this image.. I liked the light shining through the one window.

Jane's Carousel

Jane's Carousel is located on the East River in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The carousel was originally created in 1922 and is on the Historic Preservation list. It's a classic carousel encased by glass so you can see the Manhattan skyline while riding the carousel. The ride's movement to me is the essence of the carousel and I wanted to capture that.

Liberty at Sunset

Cold winter night but always a beautiful sunset to watch "The Lady" as the sun sets behind her. A small cruise ship passes by in the harbor and all is quiet. A daily reminder of our freedoms and our good fortune to live in the USA...
